Dental Implants
What is an Implant?
A Dental Implant is a device inserted into the jawbone, used to attach replacement artificial teeth directly to the gum. The Titanium screw-like device has a very good compatibility to bone. Implants effectively become just like a natural tooth allowing replacement of missing teeth without requiring support from adjacent teeth.
How long do they last?
Implants have the potential to last a lifetime. If good oral hygiene is maintained there is little reason an implant will fail. Success rates are over 90%.
Who can benefit from an Implant?
Patients who have teeth knocked out in accidents, failed root canal therapy, where teeth are missing or where conventional bridgework or dentures are not feasible, desired or have failed. Patients with loose and uncomfortable dentures may be able to stabilise them with implants.
How do I know if I can have an Implant?
You will need to attend a specialist Periodontist or Oral Surgeon, to assess whether your jaw and gums are suitable for implant treatment. After detailed exam and treatment planning a thorough discussion of the implant procedure will occur and you will also be advised of final costs and length of the treatment.
How long does the treatment take?
The implant is placed via a minor surgical procedure followed by a period (from 2-6 months) of healing which allows the implant to integrate with the surrounding tissues. The restorative work to place the artificial tooth commences at the end of the healing period, and can take 1-2 months. All up, treatment can take between 6-12 months.
Is the treatment painful?
The local anaesthetic used is the same as that for a filling. Any mild ache in the area is usually controlled with pain-killers.
Are there any complications?
The complications that may arise from dental implant placement are much the same as that for any minor oral surgery such as a tooth extraction. Detailed pre-treatment examination and radiographs (X-rays) helps identify any specific risks, and these are discussed fully with you before we commence treatment.
Caring for an Implant
If you have good oral hygiene then there is little additional effort to look after your implant. Implants do require regular review and maintenance by your dentist, and also require radiographs every few years to ensure the implant remains integrated with the surrounding tissues.
How much does Implant Treatment cost?
This depends on each patient's situation with full costings provided before we start treatment. As a very rough estimate, a single tooth implant can cost between $2,000- 5,000.
